In the end of American Beauty, why do you suppose the neighbor kills Lester? Also why does his wife Kathryn come home and start weeping? I thought a few hours ago she was planning to kill Lester herself so that she can resume her relationship with Buddy Kane. Shouldn't she be happy because someone did the murdering for her?How do you interpret the ending of ';American Beauty'; *Contains SPOILERS*?
The neighbor was so internally conflicted because he was so deep in the closet yet at the same time totally anti-gay that he couldn't bear the thought of someone knowing his secret. That coupled with the anger about being rejected enraged him enough to kill Spacey's character.

To answer your followup question I personally think she only thought about killing him (Never any planned out intent) and only bought the gun to further satisfy these fantasies perhaps climaxing with her drawing the gun on him without ever intending to fire. Or another scenario could be that she did have every intention of doing it but as the viewer you see that it is something she would have more than likely backed out of at the last minute. I guess you could compare it to how some suicidal people plan out their death and are determined to follow through, but once it comes down to go-time they change their minds because they realize what they are about to do is no longer fantasy, but reality.
