Maybe well intentioned people are trying to be kind. They are possibly trying to boost the self-esteem of someone insecure enough to question their appearence. Furthermore, some people come off as incredibly shallow with their beauty queries and it's entirely possible that we lecture for the same reason your mother would: to keep you from makeing an #ss out of yourself in person.
