What are those flat rectangular things they put under the model's face for beauty shots?

What is it called and why is it used? What are those flat rectangular things they put under the model's face for beauty shots?
They are reflectors and are there to bounce light back onto the face. What are those flat rectangular things they put under the model's face for beauty shots?
The are reflectors. It is usually much cheaper to use a reflectors than another flash (and also easier as the reflected light is always lower than the main light). There's nothing magic about them. Just ANY white piece of cardboard will do (many people use foam core boards).

These are the little things that makes the pro-photographer picture subtly different

Good luck.......
It's a reflector, and it's used to ';open up'; shadows. Women usually look best if the shadows are minimal -- just enough to give modeling to the features. Men can take stronger shadows. BTW, reflectors are easy to make -- even a large, white poster board will reflect a lot of light.
